The FIBA Asia Championship 2001 (officially: Asian Basketball Championship in 2001 ) was the 21st edition of this tournament and found from July 20 to July 28, 2001 in Shanghai , People's Republic of China instead. It was organized by FIBA Asia , the Asian basketball association. The two best teams qualified for the 2002 World Basketball Championship .

Attendees

A total of 16 teams were qualified for the tournament. After the withdrawal of two teams and the disqualification of the Philippines, 14 teams took part in the 2001 Asian Cup.

All games were played in two different sports halls in Shanghai .

Preliminary round

In the preliminary round two groups of three teams each and two groups of four teams each played against each other. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. The two best in each group reached the group stage. The third and fourth placed played for places 9-14.
