The 1989 Asian Basketball Championship (officially: FIBA Asia Championship 1989 ) was the 15th edition of this tournament and took place from September 15th to 24th in Beijing , People's Republic of China . It was organized by FIBA Asia , the Asian basketball association. 15 teams took part in this tournament. The two best teams qualified for the 1990 World Basketball Championship .

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in three groups with four teams and one group with three teams. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. The two best in each group played for places 1-8 in the final round. The third and fourth placed played for places 9-15.
