The Iranian national basketball team represents Iran in men's international basketball matches. Since its recognition by FIBA in 1947, it has been one of the strongest national teams in the Middle East. The team is the current Asian champion (2013 in Manila ).

history

The national basketball team of Iran was initially relatively unsuccessful on the international stage. She qualified twice for the Summer Olympics . At the 1948 Summer Olympics in London , she finished 14th. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, the Iranians faced multiple world and Olympic champions in the group games: Argentina , Australia , Croatia and Russia . The Iranian selection was brave, but lost the games in the preliminary round Group A . The most successful players were Samad Nikkhah Bahrami (86 points; 17.2 AVG) and Hamed Hadadi (83 points; 16.6 AVG) and Arsalan Kazemi.

By winning the Asian Basketball Championship in 2009 and 2013 , the Iranian basketball players qualified for the subsequent World Basketball Championship .

As a three-time Asian champion, the team is one of the best teams in the Asian basketball association on a continental level.

successes

One of Iran's greatest successes is winning the gold medal at the 2007 Asian Basketball Championships in Tokushima (Japan), 2009 in Tianjin (China) and 2013 in Manila (Philippines). Added to this is a third place at the Asian Cup in 2015. Two other important placements are the two bronze medals that the team won at the Asian Games in 1951 (New Delhi), 2006 (Doha) and 2010 (Guangzhou).
