The 2005 Asian Basketball Championship (officially: FIBA Asia Championship 2005 ) was the 23rd edition of this tournament and took place from July 28th to September 5th, 2005 in Doha , Qatar . It was organized by FIBA Asia , the Asian basketball association. The three best teams qualified for the 2006 World Basketball Championship .

Attendees

A total of 16 teams took part in the 2005 Asian Cup, which qualified for the tournament in different ways.

All games were played in two different sports halls in Doha .

Preliminary round

In the preliminary round four teams played against each other in four groups. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. The two best in each group reached the group stage. The third placed played for places 9-12. The fourth place played for places 13-16.

The two best from groups E and F played in the knockout system for places 1 to 4. The third and fourth placed from groups E and F played in the knockout system for places 5 to 8. The winners of groups G and H played for 9th place, the second placed for 11th place, the third placed for 13th place and the last of groups G and H for 15th place.
