The 1986 Asian Basketball Championship (officially: FIBA Asia Championship for Men 1986 ) was the 13th edition of this tournament and took place from December 28, 1985 to January 5, 1986 in Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia . It was organized by FIBA Asia , the Asian basketball association. 15 teams took part in this tournament. The top three teams qualified for the 1986 World Basketball Championship .

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in three groups with four teams and one group with three teams. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point.
