The 1987 Asian Basketball Championship (officially: FIBA Asia Championship 1987 ) was the 17th edition of this tournament and took place from November 22nd to September 1st, 1987 in Bangkok , Thailand . It was organized by FIBA Asia , the Asian basketball association. The winner qualified for the 1988 Summer Olympics .

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in three groups with four teams and one group with three teams. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. The two best of each group played in groups 1 and 2 for places 1–8. The third and fourth places played in groups 3 and 4 for places 9-15.
