In the preliminary round, six teams played against each other in four groups. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time. The four teams with the highest points in each group qualified for the round of 16. In the event of a tie, decided
- the direct comparison
- the basket quotient for the matches between the teams with the same points
- the basket quotient for all encounters in the group
- the lot
about the placement.
After the preliminary round, the four best teams in each group competed against each other in a knockout system . In the round of 16, the group winners played against the fourth-placed and the second-placed against the third-placed from the other group in the same half of the table (A / B, C / D). In the quarter-finals, the two halves of the table then overlapped, so that teams from the same preliminary round group could meet again in the semifinals at the earliest. From the quarter-finals, eliminated teams also played placement games.
