Carlos Alberto Arroyo Bermúdez (born July 30, 1979 in Fajardo ) is a retired Puerto Rican basketball player.

Athletic career

Arroyo started his career with the Cariduros from his hometown, for which he played from 1996 in the "summer league" Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN). In the fall of 1997 he moved to Florida International University in Miami to study . There he played for the university team Golden Panthers, among other things, together with the later NBA professional Raja Bell in the Sun Belt Conference of the NCAA Division I. During these four years at college, however, this team did not qualify for the national NCAA finals . During this time he was still active in the domestic BSN; with the Cangrejeros from Santurce he won five of six championships between 1998 and 2003 except for 2002.

Although Arroyo had not been selected in the NBA Entry Draft after completing his studies in 2001 , he was finally able to earn a place in the roster of the Toronto Raptors in the summer / fall of 2001. There he saw only short periods of use and was dismissed in January 2002, whereupon Arroyo then completed four games for the Basque club Taugrés from Vitoria-Gasteiz in the Spanish ACB league . In March 2002, Arroyo was taken back under contract with the Denver Nuggets from another NBA club.

For the following season, NBA 2002/03 , Arroyo got a long-term contract with the Utah Jazz. In the first season still a supplementary player, Arroyo was then in the NBA 2003/04 "starter" in all 71 championship games in which Arroyo took part, and quadrupled his playing minutes to just under 30 minutes per game. Despite a positive win balance of 42 wins in 82 games in a strong Western Conference, the Jazz missed the place in the play-offs for the championship.

Arroyo then gained particular attention when he led the Puerto Rican national basketball team as playmaker, which defeated the United States' NBA pro selection at the Athens Olympics . However, you could not crown the victory in the intermediate round in the prestige duel against the American motherland, since, unlike the US professionals who won the bronze medal in the end, after a quarter-final defeat against Italy, you were without a medal.

In the 2004/05 NBA , Arroyo was no longer "Starting Point Guard" of Jazz and was given to the Detroit Pistons in the following season in a player swap. There, however, his playing times continued to decrease to just under 12 minutes per game and he was passed on to Orlando Magic after a year. At Magic, he usually came into play from the bench, but was an integral part of the rotation of the players with over 20 minutes playing time per game.

When his contract ended after the NBA in 2007/08 , Arroyo moved in 2008 for a full season to the Israeli series champion Maccabi from Tel Aviv . While Maccabi defended its national championship, with Arroyo named Most Valuable Player of the final series, Maccabi missed the ULEB Euroleague 2008/09 for the first time since the introduction of the quarter-final play-offs to make it into the round of the top eight teams and was already eliminated in the Second round against the Spanish representatives Real Madrid and FC Barcelona . Arroyo's contract was then not renewed and he returned to the NBA.

After Arroyo last played in Florida in 2008 for the Orlando Magic in the NBA, he was signed as a " free agent " by the Heat from his former university in Miami in 2009 . In the 2009-10 NBA , his role was similar to what he had previously played with the Magic. In a good 22 minutes of playing time, he came up with a good six points and three assists per game, whereby he was a starter in half of the games. In the following season, his playing time did not increase, but he was a starter on the field in over 80 percent of the season's games. So the news of Arroyo's sacking came as a bit of a surprise, and they all agreed that they were being made to make room for Mike Bibby . He was then committed by the Boston Celtics, but no longer used in the 2011 play-offs when the Celtics were eliminated in the second round against the Heat.

In the 2011/12 season, Arroyo was signed by the Turkish club Beşiktaş from Istanbul at the end of 2011 . At the end of the season he won with this team not only the second national championship for the club since 1975, but also a " Triple Crown " from a national double and winning the third European club competition EuroChallenge . Arroyo secured only the second title of a Turkish team in an international club competition with a strong final quarter in the European Cup final. In the following season 2012/13 Arroyo initially had no contract before he signed with Beşiktaş 'local rivals Galatasaray at the turn of the year. There Arroyo was able to celebrate the Turkish championship at the end of the season. In March 2015, Arroyo left Galatasaray due to a lack of salary. After an interlude at Cangrejeros de Santurce (Puerto Rico), he signed a contract with FC Barcelona in July 2015 .
