The American Basketball Championship 2009 (officially: Campeonato FIBA ​​Americas 2009 ( English The FIBA ​​Americas Championship 2009 )) is the 14th edition of this tournament and took place from August 26th to September 6th, 2009 in the Puerto Rican capital San Juan . In addition to the continental championship for the men's national teams of the continental association FIBA America, the tournament also included qualifying for the 2010 World Basketball Championship . Of the ten participating teams, the four semi-finalists qualified directly for the world championships. Since defending champions United States as Olympic champions were already directly qualified for the world championships, they decided not to participate in the continental championships. The games were played exclusively in the Coliseo Roberto Clemente .

The two worst-placed teams in the preliminary round were then eliminated from the tournament, while the other teams, taking their preliminary round results with them, played an intermediate round as a continuation of the round-robin tournament against the best four teams in the other preliminary round group. The best four teams of this intermediate round were qualified for the world championships and played the medals of the continental championships among themselves in the final round in the knockout system .
