The Torneo de las Américas 1988 ( english The 1988 Tournament of the Americas ) is the third edition of the FIBA Americas Championship and found in the 22 to 31 May 1988 Uruguayan capital Montevideo instead. The tournament was about qualifying for the basketball tournament at the 1988 Olympic Games . In retrospect, the tournament was included in the order of the American championships and counted as a continental championship for national teams of men of the continental federation FIBA America . Of the seven participating teams in the end, the three medal winners qualified directly for the Olympic Games. The reigning world champion United States was already qualified for the Olympic tournament and did not take part, as did the Panamanian national team , which did not make the continental finals and forfeited the opportunity to qualify for the Olympic Games. Another successor was not named, so that seven teams played for the Olympic qualification and the tournament medals.

Attendees

There was a regional qualification according to the sub-zones of the continental association. In addition to the two national teams of the North American subzone and host Uruguay, the medal winners of the Central and South American championships were also qualified. The United States and Panama, as silver medal winners of the Centrobasket 1997, did not take part, so that one place in the field of participants remained vacant.
