The American Basketball Championship 2011 (officially: Campeonato FIBA Americas 2011 ( English The FIBA Americas Championship 2011 )) was the 15th edition of this tournament and took place from August 30 to September 11, 2011 in Mar del Plata , Argentina . In addition to the continental championship for the men's national teams of the continental federation FIBA America, the tournament also included qualification for the basketball tournament at the 2012 Olympic Games . Of the ten participating teams, the two finalists qualified directly for the Olympic Games. The three next-placed teams in the intermediate round were allowed to participate in the 2012 qualifying tournament for the Olympic basketball competition. Since world champions United States were already directly qualified for the Olympic Games, they did not participate in the continental championships. The games were played exclusively in the Polideportivo Islas Malvinas .

Regional qualification according to the sub-zones of the Continental Union. Venezuela moved up as fourth-placed team in the Campeonato Sudamericano 2010 for hosts Argentina, who already qualified automatically. When the United States waived, Panama was invited as the fifth-placed team of the Campeonato Sudamericano 2010.

At the tournament, a preliminary round was held in two groups of five teams each as a round-robin tournament. The two worst-placed teams in the preliminary round were then eliminated from the tournament, while the other teams, taking their preliminary round results with them, played an intermediate round as a continuation of the round-robin tournament against the best four teams in the other preliminary round group. The fifth-placed team of the second round was eligible to participate in the qualifying tournament for the 2012 Olympics, while the four semi-finalists in the knockout system playing off the two automatic qualifying places and the medals of the tournament.
