The Dominican Republic men's national basketball team represents the Dominican Republic in international basketball matches. She is one of the better national teams in Latin America and is a regular participant in the continental finals at the American Basketball Championship . In the recent past in particular, she has celebrated greater successes, at the 2011 American Championships a bronze medal was won for the first time and only narrowly missed qualifying for the 2012 Olympic basketball competition .

history

In 1977 they won the Central American Championships for the first time in front of a home crowd and were allowed to take part in the 1978 World Cup in the Philippines . After you had no win in the preliminary round, you could achieve two more victories in the placement round and took third from last and twelfth place in the championships. Thereafter, there were no more successes. It was not until the mid-1990s that medals were won again at the Central American Championships. After the team was regularly among the medal winners in this competition, they finally won the "Centrobasket 2004" in front of their own audience, when the permanent rival and multiple Olympian Puerto Rico could be defeated with one point difference. Under the leadership of NBA professionals Al Horford , Francisco García and Charlie Villanueva as well as Jack Michael Martínez and Luis Alberto Flores , they won a medal for the first time at the 2011 American Championships when Puerto Rico, against which they had lost in the second round , in the "small Finale “could be defeated. This qualified for the qualifying tournament for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. In June 2012 the team defeated Puerto Rico at the Central American Championships in front of their home crowd and won the title for the third time against the record winner of this competition. At the Olympic qualification tournament in early July 2012 in Caracas , Venezuela , the well-known US coach John Calipari trained and successfully survived the preliminary round. After Macedonia, who were fourth in the European Championship, was defeated in the quarterfinals , they lost the two decisive games against the multiple Olympic medalist Lithuania and, surprisingly, against Nigeria .
