Club Baloncesto Gran Canaria is a Spanish basketball club from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands , which plays in the ACB league. The first team plays its home games in the Gran Canaria Arena .

history

The basketball club Club Baloncesto Gran Canaria was founded in 1963 as Colegio Claret , a sports club of the Claretian School in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria . He played from 1962/63 to 1983/84, first in the Segunda Division, the Spanish second division, as well as in other lower class divisions. In the 1984/85 season, the first team was promoted to the ACB league , the highest Spanish division. The association then passed a new statute on August 22, 1985 and set up its own business under the name Claret Club Baloncesto . As a result, the Canary Islands established themselves for some time as an elevator team that could never stay in the ACB league for more than two seasons in a row, but mostly quickly rose again. In 1988 the name was changed to CB Gran Canaria.

The 1994/95 season ended CB Gran Canaria as champions of the second division and rose for the fourth time in the ACB league , from which they have not been relegated so far. In the 2000/01 season CB Gran Canaria took part in an international competition for the first time, at the Korać Cup the team was eliminated in the second round. In 2003/04 the club was eligible to start the ULEB Cup for the first time , with eight participations in the second highest European club competition so far, the Canaries achieved the best result in 2009/10 , when the team only failed in the quarter-finals at Panellinios Athens .

In the 2012/13 season, in which the team finished the basic round in seventh place, a surprising 2-1 win against Laboral Kutxa made it into the semi-finals of the Spanish championship for the first time in the club's history. There the Canaries failed 3-0 at FC Barcelona . For financial reasons, the club decided not to take part in the Eurocup 2013/14 , for which the team would have been eligible.

In the 2014/15 season , on the other hand, they took part in the Eurocup and advanced to the final, where they were defeated by the Russians from BK Chimki .
