Ime Sunday Udoka (born August 9, 1977 in Portland , Oregon ) is a retired American basketball player of Nigerian descent and current assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs .

His older sister Mfon Udoka played in the WNBA (including the Houston Comets ). Imes mother is American and his father is Nigerian. His father died while preparing for the season in October 2006.

Player career

Udoka attended Jefferson High School in Portland. He then played for two years for Eastern Utah Junior College and one season at the University of San Francisco and finished his college career at Portland State University . His professional career began in the 2000/01 season. After he had spent some time in second-rate US leagues (such as the NBDL ), he was brought into the NBA on January 14, 2004 by the Los Angeles Lakers . After only four games, in which he could make an average of 2.0 points, he had to leave the Lakers again. He then returned to the NBA D-League.

In 2005 he spent some time in Europe. He played nine games in France for JA Vichy and averaged 24.8 points. Ime then received several offers from larger French clubs. However, he refused to try his luck in North America and to fulfill his dream of the NBA.

Udoka was awarded the 2005/06 NBA Development League Joel Collier Sportsmanship Award and was elected to the All-NBA D-League First Team after scoring 17.1 points and 6.2 rebounds for the Fort Worth Flyers .

On April 6, 2006 Udoka was signed by the New York Knicks . In total, he played eight games for the Knicks in the 2005/06 season and scored an average of 2.8 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. On September 11, 2006, however, he was released by the Knicks.

Prior to the 2006/07 season , Udoka was invited to the Portland Trail Blazers training camp , his hometown. He impressed the coaches so much that he was included in the Blazers' seasonal roster. He was even in the starting line-up of his team in all 75 regular season games. In 28.6 minutes he made an average of 8.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 0.9 steals per game.

On August 16, 2007 Udoka moved to the San Antonio Spurs . After the 2009 season, Udoka became a free agent and re-signed with the Trail Blazers, but was released on October 22, 2009 by the Blazers. On November 4, 2009 Udoka moved to the Sacramento Kings .

On November 24, 2010 Udoka got another contract with the San Antonio Spurs. After Udoka played for CB Murcia in Spain for half a year in January 2012 , he is now back in San Antonio as an assistant coach.

Nigerian national team

Udoka was born in the United States. However, his father comes from Nigeria , which is why he was included in the squad of the Nigerian national basketball team. He played for Nigeria at the 2005 African Cup of Nations and the 2006 World Cup . At the 2006 World Cup in Japan , Udoka was able to achieve an average of 14.2 points and 5.2 rebounds in six games.
