Joseph Adetunji Adefarasin (born April 24, 1920 in Ijebu-Ode ; † March 28, 1989 ) was a Nigerian lawyer .

Career

He attended St. Peter's Primary School in Lagos and from 1932 to 1939 Igbobi College in Yaba, a suburb of Lagos. From 1946 to 1949, studied at the Law at King's College in London and was admitted to the bar in January 1950th After employment as a civil servant in various government institutions and legal authorities in Nigeria, he worked as a judge from April 1964. From the beginning of November 1974 to the end of April 1985, he served as the presiding judge at the Supreme Court of the Nigerian state of Lagos , after having held this position as a substitute since 1970.

In addition, he served as President of the national Red Cross Society of his home country from 1974 until his death . From 1977 to 1981 he was the first and so far only African President of the League of Red Cross Societies, which has been called the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies since 1983 , and succeeded the Mexican José Barroso Chávez in this office . His successor was Enrique de la Mata Gorostizaga from Spain .

At the General Assembly of the Federation in November 1987, he received the Henry Dunant Medal for his work , the highest honor of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

He was married from 1951 and has five children.
