Ijebu-Ode is a city in the state of Ogun in Nigeria with 209,191 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2005).
The city is a transport hub and regional trading center. Ijebu-Ode is known for Sungbos Eredo , a 150 km long earth wall with up to 15 m deep trenches, similar to the walls of Benin .
history
Ijebu-Ode is an ancient city; it was the capital of the kingdom of the Ijebu , a tribe of the Yoruba , in the 16th century . In December 1941, Muhammad Jumat Imam (1896-1960) started his millenarian Mahdiyya movement in Ijebu-Ode . Jumat Imam, who himself came from a Muslim family, declared himself a Mahdi and called for unity between Muslims and Christians.
