Adebayo Adedeji (born December 21, 1930 in Ijebu-Ode , Ogun State , Nigeria ; † April 25, 2018 in Lagos ) was a Nigerian politician and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UN / ECA).

biography

After attending school, he first studied at the University College of Ibadan at the University of Leicester , where he earned a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in 1958 . He completed another postgraduate course at Harvard University in 1961 with a Master of Public Administration (MPA).

After completing his studies, he initially worked in the Nigerian public service before becoming professor of administration at the University of Ife in 1966 . In 1967 he obtained a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D. Economics) from the University of London .

In 1971 he was appointed Minister for Economic Development and Reconstruction in the government of President Yakubu Gowon . He held this office until 1975.

He then became Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa in June 1975 . He held this office for sixteen years until 1991. At the same time he was as such from January 1978 to 1991 Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations. He was also the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for the African Economic Crisis from 1984 to 1991 .

He then became the founder and executive director of the African Center for Development and Strategic Studies (ACDESS ). In addition, he became a member of the advisory board of the UN African Futures Project.

Adebayo Adedeji published numerous specialist books that dealt in particular with the development of Africa . His most important works include:
