Ogun is a federal state in the West African country of Nigeria with the capital Abeokuta , which is also the largest city in the state with 593,140 inhabitants (as of 2005).

geography

The state is located in the southwest of the country and is bordered to the northwest by the state of Oyo , to the northeast by the state of Osun , to the south by the state of Lagos and the Atlantic Ocean , to the west by Benin and to the east by the state of Ondo .

history

The state was formed on February 3, 1976 from part of the former state "Western". The first governor was Saidu Ayodole Balogun between March 1976 and July 1978. The current governor has been Gbenga Daniel since May 29, 2003 .

The state is divided into 20 Local Government Areas . These are: Abeokuta North, Abeokuta South, Ado-Odo-Ota, Egbado North, Egbado South, Ewekoro, Ifo, Ijebo East, Ijebu North, Ijebu North-East, Ijebu-Ode, Ikenne, Imeko-Afon, Ipokia, Obafemi- Owode, Odeda, Odogbolu, Ogun Waterfront, Remo North and Shagamu.

economy

The mining and agriculture are among the largest industries in Ogun. There are limestone , chalk , phosphate and gravel mined and cereals , rice , maize , cassava , yams , bananas , cocoa , cola nuts , rubber , palm oil harvested and palm kernels. The state is the largest producer of Kolanut in Nigeria.

Lumber , ceramic products, bicycle tires , carpets , adhesives and other things are also produced in Ogun .
