Yobe is a federal state of the West African country Nigeria with the capital Damaturu , which is also the largest city in the state with 255,913 inhabitants (2005).
geography
The state is located in the northeast of the country and is bordered by the Republic of Niger to the north, the state of Gombe to the south , the state of Jigawa to the northwest , the state of Bauchi to the southwest, and the state of Borno to the east . The state of Yobe, like the state of Borno, is located in the Nigerian part of the Chad basin .
The main rivers are the Hadejia and the Jama'are , both of which irrigate the Hadejia-Nguru wetlands and near the village of Gashua the two merge, this river is then called the Komadugu Yobe . A branch of the Hadeija flowing to the north, the Marma Canal, flows into the 37 km² large Nguru Lake . The Bade Nguru Wetland and the Bulatura Area are national nature reserves and part of the Chad Basin National Park .
history
The state was formed on August 27, 1991 from part of the state of Borno.
The first administrator was Sanni Daura Ahmed between August 28, 1991 and January 1992. Bukar Ibrahim has been the current governor since May 29, 1999 .
population
The largest ethnic group living in the state of Yobe are the Fulani . In addition, the Kanuri , Kare-Kare , Bolewa , Ngizim , Bade , Hausa , Ngamo and Shuwa live in Yobe .
Islam is by far the largest religion in the province. Jobe introduced Islamic law, the Sharia , at the turn of the millennium .

The state is divided into 17 Local Government Areas . These are: Barde, Bosari, Damaturu, Fika, Fune, Geidam, Gujba, Gulani, Jakusko, Karasuwa, Machina, Nangere, Nguru , Potiskum, Tarmua, Yunusari and Yusufari.
economy
The agriculture and fishing are the main economic activities in Yobe. The state's cattle markets are among the largest in West Africa. The climatic and ecological conditions allow the cultivation of rubber , peanuts , beans , cotton and other things. On mineral resources are gypsum , kaolin and quartz present.
