Nguru is a city and Local Government Area in the state of Yobe in Nigeria .

geography

Nguru is bordered by Yusufari to the north, Karasuwa to the east, Guri to the south, Biriniwa to the west and Machina to the northwest . The main town of Nguru is around fifty kilometers from the state border with Niger . The Hadejia-Nguru wetlands extend southeast of Nguru . The annually recurring flooding of the wetlands is essential for the sectors of agriculture, grazing and fishing practiced by the population. They also replenish the groundwater reserves on which the city depends. South of the city lies the 37 km² large Nguru Lake , which plays an important role in feeding the local population due to its abundance of fish.

history

Nguru was a province of the Kanem-Bornu Empire . At the beginning of the 19th century, the expansion of the Sokoto Caliphate under Usman dan Fodio threatened the empire, which called on troops from Nguru to help. The ruler of Nguru tried to gain independence from Kanem-Bornu during the chaos of war, but was only supported by the ruler of the province of Mounio and was unsuccessful. In Zinder , another province of Kanem-Bornus, the rule of Sultan Amadou dan Ténimoun began in 1893 . The Sultan first conquered Machina and then Nguru, where he installed a new ruler. After the Battle of Kousséri in 1900 and the associated fall of the Kanem-Bornu Empire, Nguru became British . In independent Nigeria, Nguru belonged to the state of Borno from 1976 until the state of Yobe was separated from Borno in 1991.

population
