particularities |
The Nguru Lake (English: Nguru Lake ) is located in the northwestern Nigerian state of Yobe , south of the city of the same name Nguru .
location
The outflow-free lake has a free water surface of 37 km², which is at an altitude of 340-345 meters above sea level and forms the northern extension of the Hadejia-Nguru wetlands . The normal water volume of the lake is given as 58 million m³.
The lake is part of the Komadugu-Yobe river system, from whose headwaters the Hadejia the Marma Canal branches off and forms its only tributary. As a result, Lake Nguru has a main flood season, between August and November, when the lake overflows its banks and irrigates its natural floodplain, which extends over an area of around 581 km². This flood plain is Dagona Ox-bow Lakes ( "Dagona- backwater called") and is a Ramsar site under the name Dagona Waterfowl Sanctuary integral part of the Chad Basin National Park . These consist of the seasonal lakes Gastu, Maram and Ox-bow. Together with Lake Nguru, they form the basis of life for around 20,000 water birds in the region and are an important resting and wintering area for migratory birds from the northern hemisphere . The term ox-bow describes a branch of the Marma Canal.
climate
The climate in the region is characterized by two seasons, the dry season from November to April and a rainy season from May to September / October. The rainy season culminates in June with the arrival of the West African monsoons . The average annual rainfall varies between 500 and 700 mm, depending on the intensity of the monsoons, and temperatures range between 19 and 45 ° C.
Flora and fauna
Lake Nguru is said to be extremely rich in algae, which serve as a food source for a large number of fish. Of these algae, the green Chlorophyta make up the lion's share of the biomass in the lake with 46%, followed by the Cyanophyta (29%), Bacillariophyta (22%) and the Dinoflagellates (2%). Twelve species of zooplankton from four families are found in the lake, from the group of Cladocera , Copepoda , Rotifera and Protozoa . In total there are up to 24 species of fish from 13 species in the lake . Of these, the filters tilapias (Cichlidae) with about 64% of the largest fish stock, followed by the gill bag catfish (Clariidae) and Knochenzünglern ( Heterotis ), respectively 6%, and the electrical catfish (Malapteruridae) (0.17%). The daily catch from the lake is given as 540.17 kg, which means that the lake is not overfished.
Fish fauna
The following fish species were found in the lake:
- West African lungfish ( Protopterus annectens )
- Nile perch ( Lates niloticus )
-
