Synodontis membranaceus ( Syn .: Hemisynodontis membranaceus ) is a whiskered catfish that occurs in the Nile basin, Senegal , Gambia , Niger and Benue , as well as in the catchment area of Lake Chad .
features
Synodontis membranaceus becomes 50 cm long and reaches a maximum weight of 1.5 kg. Its short, stocky body distinguishes it from most other whiskered catfish. The short dorsal fin tapers to a point. Directly behind it is the unusually large adipose fin that extends to the tail stalk. The shoulder process is short, triangular and pointed. The upper jaw barteln with membranes are characteristic of the species . Only the mandibles are feathered.
- Fin formula : dorsal 1/7, anal 0 / 5-6 / 7-9 / 1, pectoral 1 / 8-9.
The back is monochrome brown-gray, the sides of the body blue-gray, the belly blackish. The fins are gray, the barbels light brown with blackish membranes. While juvenile fish have spots on the sides of the body and the unpaired fins, adult animals are unspotted.
Way of life
Synodontis membranaceus is nocturnal and lives in deeper water near the bottom of the water. He feeds u. a. from crustaceans and molluscs , mosquito larvae , other insects, plankton and detritus .
Systematics
The species was in 1809 by French zoologists Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire as Pimelodus membranaceus described , in 1863 by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker of the monotypic genus Hemisynodontis assigned and 2008 as a result of phylogenetic studies of the genus Synodontis . Synodontis membranaceus is closely related to the very similar Synodontis batensoda .
