Synodontis batensoda ( Syn .: Brachysynodontis batensoda ) is a whiskered catfish that occurs in the Nile basin, Senegal , Gambia , Niger and Benue , as well as in the catchment area of Lake Chad .

features

Synodontis batensoda becomes 50 cm long and reaches a maximum weight of 1.5 kg. Its short, stocky body distinguishes it from most other whiskered catfish. The high dorsal fin tapers to a point and is supported by a powerful spine and seven, simply branched fin rays. Directly behind it is the unusually large adipose fin that extends to the tail stalk. The caudal fin is deeply forked. The upper jaw barbels with membranes are characteristic of the species. The anterior mandibular barb is only inside, the posterior is pinnate on both sides. The shoulder process is long, curved outwards at the top and blunt at the end.

Synodontis batensoda is dark in color, the back and sides of adult fish are dark brown-green to blue-gray, the belly black. The fins are gray, the unpaired dark spots. Young fish have dark spotted sides with a lighter net drawing in between.

Synodontis batensoda feeds u. a. from plankton, algae and detritus , probably also from crustaceans and molluscs , mosquito larvae and other insects.

Systematics

The species was described as Synodontis batensoda by the German scientist and Africa researcher Eduard Rüppell in 1832, assigned to the monotypic genus Brachysynodontis by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1862 and returned to the Synodontis genus in 2008 due to phylogenetic studies . Synodontis batensoda is closely related to the very similar Synodontis membranaceus .
