The gill sack catfish (Clariidae) are a family in the order of the catfish-like (Siluriformes), which includes about 100 species in 16 genera . Gill sack catfish are common in Africa and the Middle East as well as in South and East Asia.

features

A special feature of this fish family are the suprabranchial organs (bone-supported, well-perfused surface enlargements of the pharynx mucous membrane above the gill arches with the purpose of using air oxygen). This adaptation enables them to survive even in low-oxygen habitats . Some species can walk short distances overland. As a result of this and through breathing air , gill sacs are able to move from one pond to another. In addition, common features are: the long dorsal fin that covers almost the entire back, the lack of a prominent first dorsal spine (pinna), the wide gill openings and four pairs of barbels .
