Way of life

The fish lives in stagnant or slowly flowing waters such as in the lower reaches of rivers, lakes or wet fields with rather heavy vegetation. It is nocturnal and feeds on small fish, crustaceans, worms and insects.

Importance to humans

The fish is part of the traditional diet in the areas of its original range. In 2018, egg breeding succeeded for the first time in Japan. Because of its rapid growth (it reaches a weight of 800–1000 grams in 6–12 months), its breeding is economically interesting.
