On April 30, 2008, it was included in the Ramsar Convention 's list of wetlands of international importance . It is classified by the IUCN under Category IV, Biotope / Species Protection Area with Management. They are considered a good example of a wetland in the biogeographical region at the transition from the Sahel to that of Sudan .

climate

The climate in the region is known as tropical humid , with minimum temperatures in January of 12.5 ° C and maximum temperatures in April of 45 ° C. The average annual rainfall is 535 mm and the evaporation potential ranges between 2500 and 4000 mm.

Flora and fauna

flora

The soils in these wetlands are called Vertisole loam soils according to the USDA soil classification , regionally they are called firki . Accordingly, the vegetation is dominated by grass savannahs, which are interspersed with extensive bush forests, and regionally referred to as Fadama . The bush forests are dominated by the Guiera senegalensis and the Piliostigma sp. Important tree species in the region are the Baobab ( Adansonia digitata ), Balanites species, Mitragyna inermis , Anogeissus leiocarpus , eispilirformis Diospyros and hyphaene Hyphaene thebaica . The local population uses this mix of vegetation primarily as pasture land and to obtain firewood. The grass Cyperus rotundus is used as a basis for perfume production, it is mostly harvested from the rivers.

fauna

Native nesting birds include the red chalk pelican ( Pelecanus rufescens ), the white pelican ( Pelecanus onocrotalus ), the very hungry ( Mysteria ibis ), the humped goose ( Sarkidiornis melanotos ) and the gray goose ( Tockus nasutus ). A large number of African mammals live in the wetlands , including the critically endangered African wild dog ( Lycaon pictus ). Other large predators are lions ( Panthera leo ), striped hyenas ( Hyaena hyaena ), spotted hyenas ( Crocuta crocuta ), leopards ( Panthera pardus ), African golden wolves ( Canis anthus ) and striped jackals ( Canis adustus ). These hunt the herds of the red-fronted gazelle ( Eudorcas rufifrons ), waterbuck ( Kobus ellipsiprymnus ), Cape buffalo ( Syncerus caffer ) and reedbuck ( Redunca redunca ). The primates of the robed baboon ( Papio hamadryas ), hussar monkeys ( Erythrocebus patas ) and Ethiopian green monkeys ( Chlorocebus aethiops ) occur in this area.
