The Baturiya Wetlands Game Reserve is a nature reserve in the northeast of the Nigerian state of Jigawa .

location

It occupies an area of 1010.95 km² in the administrative area of the greater municipalities of Kirkasama and Kafin Hausa at an altitude of 338 to 365 above sea level. The Baturiya Wetlands extend along the course of the Kafin Hausa, to the west of the Hadejia-Nguru Wetlands , a tributary of the Komadugu Yobe . The wetlands arise from the annually recurring floods, triggered by the West African monsoon , the Kafin Hausa and consist of a network of lakes, ponds and smaller watercourses.

The nature reserve is under the joint management of the two local governments, the Ministry of the Environment and the Jigawa government. On April 30, 2008, it was included in the Ramsar Convention 's list of wetlands of international importance . The local population uses this mix of vegetation primarily as pasture land and to obtain firewood. The grass Cyperus rotundus is used as a basis for perfume production, it is mostly harvested from the rivers.

The Baturiya Wetlands are of particular importance for the native avifauna , especially water birds, and for migratory birds from the northern hemisphere , which use the wetlands as resting and wintering areas. Native nesting birds include the red chalk pelican ( Pelecanus rufescens ), the white pelican ( Pelecanus onocrotalus ), the very hungry ( Mysteria ibis ), the humped goose ( Sarkidiornis melanotos ) and the gray goose ( Tockus nasutus ). In 2001 197,535 water birds could be counted in the area of the Baturiya Wetlands.

A large number of African mammals live in the wetlands , including the critically endangered African wild dog ( Lycaon pictus ). Other large predators are lions ( Panthera leo ), striped hyenas ( Hyaena hyaena ), spotted hyenas ( Crocuta crocuta ), leopards ( Panthera pardus ), African golden wolves ( Canis anthus ) and striped jackals ( Canis adustus ). These hunt the herds of the red-fronted gazelle ( Eudorcas rufifrons ), waterbuck ( Kobus ellipsiprymnus ), Cape buffalo ( Syncerus caffer ) and reedbuck ( Redunca redunca ). The primates of the robed baboon ( Papio hamadryas ), hussar monkeys ( Erythrocebus patas ) and Ethiopian green monkeys ( Chlorocebus aethiops ) occur in this area.
