Lake Maladumba is an inland lake in the Nigerian state of Bauchi .

location

It is located in the north of the belly plateau , about 120 km northeast of the town of Bauchi , 18 km southwest of Misau and 2 km west of the village of Shelon, a fishing village. It is a shallow lake with an average depth of about two meters and lies in the river bed of the River Kuka, which flows into the River Kari. This is a tributary of the Komadugu Gana and thus the lake belongs to the river system of the Komadugu Yobe in the Chad basin , which flowed into Lake Chad until the 1980s .

climate

The climate in the region of the lake is characterized by a separation into dry and rainy seasons. The rainy season lasts from May to October and gets its greatest intensity from the arrival of the West African monsoons from June. During this time, an average of 800 mm of precipitation falls. The dry season lasts from November to April and is meteorologically determined by the dry north-east trade wind , known as Harmattan . Average temperatures range from 26 ° C during the Harmattan to 34 ° C in April and May, the hot season in the region.

Protected area

Lake Maladumba occupies an average area of ​​18.6 km² and is located in the 51.8 km² nature reserve Maladumba Lake Forest Reserve , which was included in the list of wetlands of international importance by the Ramsar Convention since April 30, 2008 . The lake is approx. 5 km long, has an average width of 300 to 400 meters and supports a wide variety of flora and fauna in the region of Sudan .

Flora and fauna

There are 29 species of fish in the lake, including the great nil pike ( Gymnarchus niloticus ), giant perch (Latinae), spiny catfish (Bagridae) and Hydrocynus sp. In the surrounding Forest Reserve there are 175 different plant species, including 26 hardwoods of the bush and tree species. These include the Acacia kamerunensis , Acacia nilotica , Combretum nigricans , Combretum molle , Tamarindus indica , Holarrhena floribunda , Burkea africana , Anogeissus leocarpa and Adansonia digitata . In this area, including the live African Buffalo ( Syncerus caffer ), bushbuck ( Tragelaphus scriptus ), aardvark ( Orycteropus afer ), African civet ( Civettictis civetta ), genet ( Genetta sp. ), Brush-tailed porcupine Atherurus africanus , Patas monkeys ( Erythrocebus patas ) and monitor lizards ( Varanus sp. ).
