Bauchi is a federal state of the West African country Nigeria with the capital of the same name, Bauchi , which is also the largest city in the state with 301,284 inhabitants (as of 2012).

geography

The state is located in the north of the country and is bordered to the northwest by the state of Jigawa , to the northeast by the state of Yobe , to the southwest by the state of Plateau , to the southeast by the state of Taraba , to the west by the states of Kaduna and Kano and to the east by the State of Gombe . The Gongola River , the longest tributary of the Benue , crosses the state . In the north of the plateau lies Maladumba Lake , which is part of a wetland of international importance according to the Ramsar Convention .

history

The state was formed on February 3, 1976 from part of the former state "North-Eastern". The first governor was Mohammed Kaliel between March 1976 and July 1978. The current governor has been Mohammed Abubakar since 2015 .

Islamic law, the Sharia , has been in force in Bauchi since 2001 . It was introduced under pressure from Islamic groups and is the main source of legislation.

After the imposition of a demonstration ban against the Islamic group Boko Haram , unrest broke out in the capital, Bauchi , at the end of July 2009 , and it spread to Yobe , Borno and other regions. At least 200 people were killed in a very short time.

The state is divided into 20 Local Government Areas . These are: Alkaleri, Bauchi, Bogoro, Damban, Darazo, Dass, Gamawa, Ganjuwa, Giade, Itas-Gadau, Jama'are, Katagun, Kirfi, Misau, Ningi, Shira, Tafawa-Balewa, Toro, Warji and Zakki.

The main industry in Bauchi is agriculture . The fertile soil favors the cultivation of agricultural products such as corn , rice , millet , peanuts and others. The livestock in the state is very important.
