Kwara is a federal state of the West African country Nigeria with the capital Ilorin , which is also the largest city in the state with 814,246 inhabitants (2005).

geography

The state is located in the west of the country and borders the state of Niger to the north, the state of Osun to the south, the state of Oyo to the southwest , the state of Ekiti to the south-east, Benin to the west and the state of Kogi to the east . Large parts of the Lower Kaduna-Middle Niger Floodplain protected area are located in the state; it is a wetland area of international importance to the Ramsar Convention .

history

The state was formed on May 27, 1967 under the name "West Central". On February 3, 1976, it was renamed Kwara. The first governor was David Bamigboye between May 28, 1967 and July 1975. The current governor since the April 26th 2011 elections has been Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed .

The state is divided into 16 Local Government Areas . These are: Asa, Baruten, Edu, Ekiti, Ifelodun, Ilorin East, Ilorin South, Ilorin West, Irepodun, Isin, Kaiama, Moro, Offa, Oke-Oro, Oyun and Pategi.

economy

The agriculture is the main industry and the main source of income of the state. There are cotton , cocoa , coffee , cola nuts , tobacco and coconuts grown.

Mining is also important to the state's economy . There are limestone , marble , feldspar , clay , kaolin , quartz and granite mined. Furthermore, beer is brewed in Kwara and pharmaceutical products , textiles , paper , foam rubber , plastics , sugar and other products are manufactured.

Kwara is connected to five other states by a network of roads . The railway line from Lagos to the north of the country runs through the state. The Ilorin International Airport (IATA: ILR, ICAO: DNIL) is located in Ilorin .
