Ekiti is a federal state in the West African country of Nigeria with the capital Ado Ekiti . The largest city in the state is Efon Alaaye with 279,339 inhabitants (2005).
geography
The state is located in the southwest of the country and is bordered by the state of Kwara to the north, the state of Ondo to the south, the state of Osun to the west and the state of Kogi to the east .
history
The state was formed on October 1, 1996 from part of the state of Ondo . The first administrator was Mohammed Bawa between October 7, 1996 and August 1998. Tunji Olurin has been the current governor since November 13, 2006 .

The state is divided into 16 Local Government Areas . These are: Ado-Ekiti, Efon, Ekiti East, Ekiti South-West, Ekiti West, Emure, Gbonyin, Ido-Osi, Ijero, Ikere, Ikole, Ilejemeje, Irepodun-Ifelodun, Ise-Orun, Moba and Oye.
economy
The main industry is agriculture . The climatic and ecological conditions allow the cultivation of grain , cocoa , coconuts , rubber , lemons , cola nuts , bananas , corn , rice , beans , yams and cassava . The production of timber plays an important role in forestry .
Ekiti is endowed with a wide variety of mineral resources . These include: kaolin , clay , cassiterite ( tin ore ), columbite , bauxite and granite .
