Edo is a federal state in the West African country of Nigeria with the capital Benin City , which is also the largest city in the state with 1,125,126 inhabitants (2005).
geography
The state is located in the south of the country and is bordered to the north and northeast by the state of Kogi , to the south by the state of Delta , to the southeast by the state of Anambra and to the west by the state of Ondo . The Okomu National Park is located about 60 km from Benin City away, in the northwestern area of the state.
population
Edo has its own language, which is also called Edo or Bini. It is spoken by about a million people. In the state of Edo, Edoid languages or Pidgin English are spoken, Yoruba as the lingua franca of Nigeria is often at least understood.
history
The state was founded on May 27, 1967 under the name "Mid-Western". On February 3, 1976, it was renamed "Bendel". On August 27, 1991 it was given its current name Edo. The first administrator was Samuel Ogbemudia from 1967 to 1975 . The current governor has been Godwin Obaseki since 2016 .

The state is divided into 18 Local Government Areas . These are: Akoko-Edo, Egor, Esan Central, Esan North-East, Esan South-East, Esan West, Etsako Central, Etsako East, Etsako West, Iguegben, Ikpoba-Okha, Ohionmwon, Oredo, Ovia North-East, Ovia South-West, Owan East, Owan West and Uhunmwonde.
economy
Edo is rich in mineral resources and so oil , natural gas , clay , chalk and marble are extracted. The vast majority of the population is employed in agriculture . There are rubber , cocoa , coconut , corn , yams , cassava , rice , bananas , corn , and fruit and vegetables grown. The state also has pharmaceutical and cement industries and a number of breweries .
