Zamfara is a federal state in the West African country of Nigeria with the capital Gusau , which is also the largest city in the state with 226,873 inhabitants (2005).

geography

The state is located in the northwest of the country and is bordered to the north by the state of Sokoto and the Republic of Niger , to the south by the states of Niger and Kaduna , to the west by the state of Kebbi , to the northeast by the state of Katsina and to the southeast by the state of Kaduna .

history

The state was formed on October 1, 1996 from part of the state of Sokoto . The first administrator was Jibril Baba Yakubu between October 7, 1996 and May 1999. His successor governor was Alhaji Ahmad Sani Yariman Bakura since May 29, 1999.

On October 27, 1999, Zamfara became the first Nigerian state to introduce Sharia law . Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari has been elected governor of the state since May 2011.

The state is divided into 14 Local Government Areas . These are: Anka, Bakura, Birnin-Magaji-Kiyaw, Bukkuyum, Bungudu, Gummi, Gusau, Kaura-Namoda, Maradun, Maru, Shinkafi, Talata-Mafara, Tsafe and Zurmi.

economy

The main industry in Zamfara is agriculture . Around 80 percent of the working population are employed in it. There are millet , corn , rice , peanuts , cotton , tobacco and beans grown. In addition, live here Fulani strains that still from a subsistence- nomadic life with cattle and zebu.
