Gusau is the capital of the Nigerian state of Zamfara . According to a calculation for 2012, the city has 147,034 inhabitants.
Gusau is located in northwest Nigeria on the Sokoto River . The residents, Muslim Hausa-Fulani , introduced Sharia law here in 1999 . On October 1, 2006, a dam broke near the city ( Gusau dam breach ), which killed around 40 people.
The Sardauna Memorial Stadium is located in Gusau, it is currently mainly used to host football matches and is the home ground of the Zamfara United FC club . The stadium has a capacity of 5000 people.
