Enugu is a federal state of the West African country Nigeria with the capital Enugu , which is also the largest city in the state with 653,436 inhabitants (2005).
geography
The state is located in the south of the country and is bordered to the northwest by the state of Kogi , to the northeast by the state of Benue , to the south by the state of Abia , to the west by the state of Anambra and to the east by the state of Ebonyi .
history
On February 3, 1976, the state of Anambra with the capital Enugu was formed from the former state of "East Central". On August 27, 1991, the state was divided into the states of Anambra with the capital Awka and Enugu with the capital of the same name. The first governor of the former state of Anambra was John Atom Kpera between March 1976 and July 1978. Chimaroke Nnamani has been the current governor of Enugu State since May 29, 1999 .

The state is divided into 17 Local Government Areas . These are: Aninri, Awgu, Enugu East, Enugu North, Enugu South, Ezeagu, Igbo-Etiti, Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Eze South, Isi-Uzo, Nkanu East, Nkanu West, Nsukka, Oji River, Udenu, Udi and Uzo-Uwani.
economy
The state is predominantly used for agriculture . Among other things, cotton , coconuts and rice are grown. The extraction of natural resources is important. There are coal , limestone , iron ore and bauxite mined and petroleum and natural gas promoted.
A large number of industrial companies are located in Enugu. These include: Enugu Vegetable Oil Products Limited in Nachi, Nigergas Company Limited in Emene, Aluminum Product Limited in Ohebe-Dim and Enugu, Building Material Industries Ltd. in Ezzambgo, Emenite Ltd. in Emene, Anambra Motor Manufacturing Company Ltd., Premier Cashew Industries Ltd. in Oghe, Nigersteels Industries Ltd. in Emene, Sunrise Flour Mill Ltd. in Emene and others.
