Benjamin Godard
Benjamin Louis Paul Godard (born August 18, 1849 in Paris , † January 10, 1895 in Cannes ) was a French composer .
Life
Benjamin Godard began learning to play the violin at the age of seven and played publicly in the quartet at the age of nine. He later studied composition with Napoléon-Henri Reber and violin with Henri Vieuxtemps at the Paris Conservatory . With the latter he toured Germany twice, where his compositional talent received significant stimulation. From 1887 he was a teacher at the conservatory.
Godard composed six operas , five symphonies , two piano and two violin concertos , string quartets, sonatas for violin and piano, piano pieces and etudes, and more than a hundred songs . In place of Jules Pasdeloup, appointed to conduct the Populaires Concerts , which he founded, Godard also proved himself as an orchestral conductor.
