A violin concerto is an instrumental concerto for violin as a solo instrument and orchestra . As a genre of instrumental music , the first works emerged from the Concerto grosso at the beginning of the 18th century . It experiences its full expression in the classical period . It is usually in three movements, with a slow movement in the middle .
