history

The city of Awka, formerly also known as Oka , was famous for its metalwork in pre-colonial times. The Awka area was the center of the Nri culture , which produced the earliest documented bronze objects from sub-Saharan Africa around 900.

Economy and Infrastructure

Awka is the seat of the partially state-owned oil company Orient Petroleum Resources . The company plans to produce oil in the Anambra River area. Awka is home to the state television station NTA Awka and the radio and television station Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) operated by the state of Anambra .

Nnamdi Azikiwe University

The city has one university, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, founded in 1992 with 24,706 students (2004/2005).
