Rivers is a federal state in the West African country of Nigeria with the capital Port Harcourt , which is also the largest city in the state with 1,148,753 inhabitants (2005).

geography

The state is located in the south of the country and is bordered to the north by the state of Imo , to the northwest by the states of Anambra and Delta , to the northeast by the state of Abia , to the south by the Atlantic Ocean , to the west by the state of Bayelsa and to the east by the state Akwa Ibom . The state occupies much of the eastern Niger Delta . The Upper Orashi Forest Reserve was added to the list of Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention in 2008.

history

The state was formed on May 27, 1967. The first governor was Alfred Papapeye Diete-Spiff between May 28, 1967 and July 1975. Celestine Omehia has been the current governor since May 29, 2007 .

On October 1, 1996, part of the state was split off and has since formed the state of Bayelsa .

economy

The main source of income for the state is oil and gas production . The state accounts for around 40 percent of Nigeria's crude oil production. Rivers is one of the industrialized states in the country. There is a petroleum refinery and operations in the petrochemical , glass and metal processing industries and a number of breweries .
