Plateau is a federal state of the West African country Nigeria with the capital Jos , which is also the largest city in the state with 816,876 inhabitants (2005).

geography

The state is located in the eastern center of the country and is bordered to the north by the state of Bauchi , to the southwest by the state of Nassarawa , to the southeast and east by the state of Taraba and to the west by the state of Kaduna . The Gongola river , which belongs to the Benue / Niger river system, has its source southeast of Jos .

religion

The state is a focal point of the conflicts between the Muslim north and the Christian south of Nigeria. Since 2001 there have been repeated clashes that have killed more than 1,000 people. In January 2010, for example, riots in the provincial capital Jos , which destroyed entire Christian districts, killed several hundred people. More than 500 Christians were killed in the night of March 7, 2010 in renewed riots between members of the Fulani (Muslims) pastoral people against the Berom (Christians) villagers in predominantly Christian parts of the village of Dogo Nahawa near Jos. Another attack in July 2012, attributed to local Muslim Fulani tribe members, killed around 100 Christians.

history

The state was formed on February 3, 1976 from part of the former state "Benue-Plateau". The first governor was Dan Suleiman between March 1976 and July 1978.

The current governor since November 13, 2006 has been Michael Botmang .

The state is divided into 17 Local Government Areas .

These are: Bakkos, Barkin-Ladi, Bassa, Jos East, Jos North, Jos South, Kanam, Kanke , Langtang North, Langtang South, Mango, Mikang, Panshkin, Qua'an-Pan, Riyom, Shendam and Wase.

economy

Agriculture is an important industry . Among other things, potatoes , peanuts , vegetables , fruits and yams are grown.

The extraction of natural resources is also important in the state. There are cassiterite , barium sulfate , clay , kaolin , tin , precious stones , quartz and feldspar promoted.
