Taraba is a federal state of the West African country Nigeria with the capital Jalingo , which is also the largest city in the state with 117,766 inhabitants (2005). Taraba is the most sparsely populated state in Nigeria.

geography

The state is located in the east of the country and is bordered to the north by the states of Bauchi and Gombe , to the northwest by the state of Plateau , to the south by Cameroon , to the west by the state of Nassarawa , to the southwest by the state of Benue and to the east by the state of Adamawa .

history

Taraba was formed on August 27, 1991 from part of Gongola State, now Adamawa . The first administrator was Adeyemi Afolahan between August 28, 1991 and January 1992. The governor since May 29, 1999 was Jolly Nyame . Danbaba Suntai has held the office since May 29, 2007 .

The state is divided into 16 Local Government Areas . These are: Ardo-Kola, Bali, Donga, Gashaka, Gassol, Ibi, Jalingo, Karim-Lamido, Kumi, Lau, Sardauna, Takum, Ussa, Wukari, Yorro and Zing.

economy

The agriculture is the main industry in Taraba. The climatic and ecological conditions allow the cultivation of grain , coffee , tea , peanuts , cotton , corn , rice , sorghum , millet , cassava and yams .

There are sheep , goats , poultry , rabbits and pigs kept. The fishing industry is also important .
