Abia is a federal state in the West African country of Nigeria , whose capital is Umuahia . The largest city is Aba with 897,613 inhabitants (2005).

geography

The state is located in the south of the country and is bordered to the north by the states of Ebonyi and Enugu , to the south by the state of Rivers , to the west by the state of Imo , to the northeast by the state of Cross River and to the southeast by the state of Akwa Ibom .

history

The state was formed on August 27, 1991 from part of the state of Imo . The first administrator was Frank Ajobena from August 28, 1991 to January 1992 . The current governor has been Okezie Ikpeazu since May 29, 2015 .

The state is divided into 15 Local Government Areas . These are: Aba North, Arochokwu, Bende, Ikwuano, Isiala-Ngwa North, Isiala-Ngwa South, Obi-Nwga, Ohafia, Osisioma, Ugwunagbo, Ukwa East, Ukwa West, Umuahia North, Umuahia South and Umu-Nneochi.

economy

Important industries in Abia are retail and agriculture . There are corn , coconuts , corn , rice , yams , cassava , fruits and vegetables grown.

The mining of zinc , fine sand and limestone as well as the extraction of crude oil are important . Furthermore, beer is brewed in Abia and textiles , glass and ceramics are produced.
