The Arnon (Hebrew אַרְנֹן) is the Old Testament biblical name of the river Wadi al-Mujib (Arabic وادي الموجب) in today's Jordan . It rises in the mountains east of the Dead Sea , flows through the Wadi Mujib and flows into the Dead Sea. About five kilometers north of the Arnon is the city of Dhiban , which as Dibon was the capital of the biblical state of Moab .
The approximately 72-kilometer-long river is dammed 25 kilometers east of its mouth by the Mujib Dam to form a lake that is used for irrigation . During the summer it sometimes falls dry and in the rainy winter it develops into a body of water up to three meters deep.
