Enugu is the capital of the state of Enugu in Nigeria with 749,235 inhabitants (as of 2012). The metropolitan area has a population of 914,185 inhabitants.
geography
The city is located in the southeast of Nigeria at the foot of the Udi Hills and extends over an area of 113 km².
history
The site was established in 1909 after coal deposits were discovered nearby . Enugu became the administrative center after the completion of the railway line to Port Harcourt in 1912. The Roman Catholic diocese of Enugu was established in 1962.
Enugu became the capital of the "East" region when it gained independence in 1960. This region was split up into three states in 1967, Enugu was now the capital of "East Central". On February 3, 1976, this state was split into two parts, Enugu became the capital of the state of Anambra . On August 27, 1991 this was also divided, Enugu has since been the capital of the state of the same name Enugu , the other part is still called Anambra, now with the capital Awka .
From May 1967 to January 1970 Enugu was also the official capital of the breakaway state of Biafra from Nigeria . However, it was no longer able to fulfill its function as the seat of government after the city was taken by Nigerian troops in October 1967 .
economy
Enugu is a major coal mining and trading center in the state of the same name. There are pharmaceutical products, steel , pottery , tiles , asbestos , cement , machinery and petroleum products produced.
The city is home to Godfrey Okoye University and the Institute of Management and Technology, which opened in 1973 .
Enugu has an airport with Akanu Ibiam International Airport ( IATA airport code : ENU , ICAO airport code : DNEN ). This is mainly used for national connections, the only international line is with Ethiopian Airlines from Enugu to Addis Ababa .

Enugu is home to Nigeria's largest seminary, Bigard Memorial Seminary, which opened in 1924 and is currently headed by Albert Okey Ikpenwa.
Sports
The Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu has a capacity of 25,000 seats. It is the venue for the " Enugu Rangers ". They play in the first Nigerian soccer league and have never been relegated from it.
