Albert Kanene Obiefuna

Albert Kanene Obiefuna (born January 30, 1930 in Oraukwu , Anambra , Nigeria ; † May 11, 2011 ) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Onitsha in Nigeria.

Life

Albert Obiefuna first studied at the teacher training college in Onitsha (1955–57), then philosophy at the seminary in Enugu (1957–1959) and Catholic theology at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome. He received on 21 December 1963 at the Urban College de Propaganda Fide the priesthood by Archbishop Grégoire-Pierre Cardinal Agagianian , prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples . He received his doctorate in moral theology in 1966 at the Roman Accademia Alfonsiana . He was first pastor at Onitsha Cathedral . From 1967 to 1976 he taught at the Bigard Memorial Seminary in Enugu, from 1976/77 he was its rector.

Pope Paul VI appointed him in 1977 as the first bishop of the newly founded diocese of Awka . The episcopal ordination donated to him on February 5, 1978 Archbishop Girolamo Prigione , Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Nigeria; Co- consecrators were Francis Arinze , Archbishop of Onitsha, and Mark Onwuha Unegbu , Bishop of Owerri .

In 1994 Albert Kanene Obiefuna was appointed coadjutor archbishop in the Archdiocese of Onitsha. On February 25, 1995 he succeeded Stephen Nweke Ezeanya as Archbishop of Onitsha. He was President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Nigeria (CCBN) from 1994 to 2000 .

In 2003 his resignation was granted. He died of cancer.
