The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri ( Latin Archidioecesis Overriensis , English Archdiocese of Owerri ) is in Nigeria situated Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Owerri .

history

The Archdiocese of Owerri was founded on February 12, 1948 by Pope Pius XII. Established with the Apostolic Constitution In christianum as the Apostolic Vicariate of Owerri .

The Apostolic Vicariate Owerri was on April 18, 1950 by Pius XII. with the Apostolic Constitution Laeto accepimus raised to the diocese and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Onitsha as a suffragan . On June 23, 1958, the Diocese of Owerri gave parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Umuahia . Further assignments of territory took place on May 16, 1961 to found the Diocese of Port Harcourt , on November 29, 1980 to found the Diocese of Orlu and on November 18, 1987 to found the Diocese of Ahiara . On March 26, 1994, the diocese of Owerri was raised to an archbishopric by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Ad aptius efficaciusque .
