The St. Marcellus Church in Stettfeld , a district of Ubstadt-Weiher in the Karlsruhe district in northern Baden-Württemberg , is a Catholic church that was given its current neo-Gothic appearance through renovation in the 1890s.

history

The location of the Marcelluskirche was already used for cults in Roman times . During construction work in the 19th century, a stone of the three gods and Roman sacrificial implements were found on the church grounds. The oldest documented evidence of the Marcellus Church dates from 1356, at that time the church in Stettfeld belonged to the Diocese of Speyer . The base of the tower, the oldest part of the church, is believed to be from that time, according to building findings. The church was much smaller than it is today until the end of the 19th century. Today's transept represents the entire interior of the church as it was until the church was expanded in 1891–93. Pastor Beda Hafen and the Archbishop's Building Office Karlsruhe under Johannes Schroth carried out the expansion to include today's main nave .

The colored interior was whitewashed after the Second World War. In the second half of the 1980s, extensive renovations took place on the church. In 1985/86 the masonry was re-grouted, the vault insulated and the roof re-covered. In 1988 and 1990 renovations followed in the interior, in which u. a. the organ loft was enlarged, warm air heating installed, a new celebration altar and ambo set up and the original color of the painting restored. The entire renovation measures resulted in costs of around DM 1.2 million, of which the municipality contributed around a quarter of equity.
