Obiora Francis Ike , nickname Obi , (born April 7, 1956 in Gusau , northwestern Nigeria ) is a Nigerian Roman Catholic clergyman and human rights activist . From 1998 to 2009 he was vicar general in the diocese of Enugu . Since 2016 he has been director of the Globethics.net foundation .

Life

Obiora Ike attended Bigard Memorial Seminary in Enugu and the Ikot Ekpene campus . At the age of 22 he received a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy . From 1978 he studied at the Leopold Franzens University Innsbruck and graduated in political science , philosophy and theology . In Innsbruck he became a deacon ordained, on July 4, 1981, he received in Hohenems in Austria's Vorarlberg by the then Feldkirch Bishop Bruno Wechner the priesthood .

In 1985 he was at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University of Bonn with the work value, meaning, and social structure of human work: with reference to " Laborem Exercens " and its relevance for a post-colonial African society in theology and philosophy doctorate . In 1986 he completed his habilitation in social ethics , history and African studies . He became a member of the African Studies Society in Los Angeles and the International Political Science Society in Ottawa, Canada.

Over the next few years he founded twenty non-governmental organizations , the first of which was the Catholic Institute for Development, Justice and Peace (CIDJAP) in Nigeria in 1986. The organizations deal with issues such as Christians and Muslims, the defense of human rights, development aid, business start-ups, education, ecumenism, the rights of self-determination, justice and peace. In 1993, he received a call to the Visiting Professor of Ethics and African History at the Dutch University of Tilburg . In 1996 he switched to the Catholic Theology Department at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

Vicar General Diocese of Enugu

From 1998 to 2009 Obiora Ike was Vicar General in the Diocese of Enugu , Nigeria. In October 2002 he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. With the support of Martin Lohmann , the former editor-in-chief of the Rheinisches Merkur , he wrote the book Wende dein face der Sonne in 2007 . He is a member of the International Society for Human Rights (ISHR) in Frankfurt am Main . He has been a member of the Club of Rome since 2005 and is its President in Nigeria. Since 2006 he has been a member of the Catholic Student Union KDSt.V. Ripuaria Aachen in the Cartellverband (CV) . At the World Church Meeting Point in Augsburg in 2008, he urged Christians living in Europe to get up from sleep and to obey the order of mission .

He is fluent in English , French , German , Igbo and Hausa .
