The Wettsaat is one of Carolus Linnaeus in his book Lapland travel described seeding technology to reduce that has the sense tillage. Two parts of spring barley and one part of winter rye are sown as mixed seeds in the spring . Since the rye needs a frost stimulus to shoot ( vernalization ), it is initially only an undersown. After the harvest of barley , rye goes into the winter and is harvested the following year.

The crop rotation observed by Linné in Lapland was only justified in border areas of cereal cultivation, if the harvest of summer cereals was after the optimal sowing time for winter rye, there was a high risk of soil erosion or the agriculture was insufficiently equipped with draft animals and farm implements ( plowing ). In the crop production in temperate Europe the Wettsaat was not included.

With the establishment of agricultural research under Albrecht Daniel Thaer, the importance of tillage , seedbed , sowing and fertilization for securing the harvest was proven.

Since the 1970s there has been increasing research into crop production with no-plow crop cultivation . The goals of direct sowing are to reduce the time and energy costs for seedbed preparation and maintenance measures, as well as minimizing soil erosion with economically acceptable harvest yields.
