Damaturu is the capital of the Nigerian state of Yobe and is located in the northeast of Nigeria. According to a calculation from 2012, the city has 46,371 inhabitants.

Part of Damaturus and its surroundings form one of the 17 Local Government Areas (LGA) of the state of Yobe with an area of ​​2366.33 km². At the last census in 1991 the LGA had 57,930 inhabitants and thus a population density of 24 inhabitants per km². In the city itself there were 141,897 inhabitants.

On November 4, 2011, Damaturu was targeted by the Islamist sect Boko Haram . About four hours after four suicide bombers blew themselves up in the neighboring town of Maiduguri , several bombs were detonated in Damaturu and targets, including the police headquarters, were attacked by fighters. Six churches, a police station and a police workshop were attacked in the Jerusalem neighborhood. The police headquarters were completely destroyed. At least 150 people were killed in the fighting.

At Christmas 2011, Boko Haram carried out two attacks in Damaturu, one of which was a suicide attack on a convoy of the State Security Service , killing four people including the suicide bomber.
