The Heinrich-Ehrhardt-Gymnasium is a high school in Zella-Mehlis .

History and architecture

In 1968 the 4th "Magnus Poser" high school , a polytechnic high school (POS) , was founded on the site of today's high school . The POS was the mainstream school in the GDR and ran from 1st to 10th grade. The school was named after the communist resistance fighter Magnus Poser , which is also typical for the establishment of schools in the GDR in the 1960s and 1970s. For the POS "Magnus Poser" a type school building was built in which three buildings are connected with three connecting corridors. The school building cost 2 million GDR marks . In the 1970s the school was expanded to include an extension and a gym. The Schulke was attended by around 650 to 700 students in the 1970s and 1980s, the class frequency was up to 36 students. In 1991 the POS was closed.

The grammar school was founded in 1991, so school operations continued. Until 2001 it was called the State High School in Zella-Mehlis . The name was given after Heinrich Ehrhardt, who had a great influence on the city and its history .

In 2014 the school signed a cooperation agreement for financial education, projects and art with the Rhön-Rennsteig-Sparkasse .

Educational offers

The school is characterized by the athletic performance of its students. In January 2020, the school’s pupils won the state competition youth trained for the Olympic Games in cross-country skiing and qualified for the fourth time in a row for the national finals.

The school is also active in the field of political education. Here, too, several classes won the "Shaping Democracy - But How?" In addition, the fate of a Jewish family was dealt with on the basis of research by schoolgirls at the grammar school, and both a memorial stone and stumbling blocks were laid in memory.
